About

Max is the Chief Science Officer at Owlstone Medical and has over 25 years’ experience in multidisciplinary technology development. For the last 10 years he has been providing the bridge between teams of clinicians, biologists, engineers, chemists and bioinformaticians to pioneer exhaled breath measurement, known as Breath Biopsy®, as a non-invasive route to detect and monitor disease and improving health outcomes. Owlstone’s mission is to save 100,000 lives and $1.5B in healthcare costs.

During his time at Owlstone, Max has driven the development of the new technologies, and the supporting clinical trials, needed to develop tests in indications including lung cancer, liver disease and lung infection.

Max has a particular interest in using ingested or inhaled compounds that directly probe biological mechanisms, allowing detection of the output on exhaled breath. His aim is to bring more tests to home-based settings, as currently this can only be done in a hospital environment.

Max has a multidisciplinary background, including a doctorate in condensed matter physics, is a recipient of the MacRobert award, the UK’s most prestigious prize for engineering innovation, and has over a dozen patents to his name.
